OSAA has switched to this process of seeding this year. As a coach, I don't like it at all. You don't know who you will play until Sunday at the earliest. Then you have to bust your hump to get scout info on them and all of a sudden it's Tuesday, again at the earliest. That being said, we don't have a great process now. I agree that sub 0.500 teams should not be allowed in the play-offs unless they win their league though. There is a better way but I don't know what it is or how to get there.

There was a Neah Bay team a few years ago who entered the playoffs with a 3-4 record. No they didn't win their league. They did however win their crossover quarterfinal game. Only to miss going to the championship game by 2 points losing the semi final game in double overtime. Their losses came early in the season due to injuries and the school canceling a couple non league games when gas prices were killing the school budget. People didn't think it was fair that they were in the playoffs then either. They got healthy, won enough to take second place in a league where the schedule was shortened because Clallam Bay didn't have enough players to field a varsity team. Would it have been fair to scratch them from playoffs because of things that were out of the athletes control? I'm not defending the WIAA nor am i disagreeing with anyone. I'm just throwing a unique scenario out there.

Maybe a school's administration wouldn't be so quick to give up forfeits if they knew it would keep them from a play-off spot if those forefits dropped them below 0.500. There were way too many forfeits this year that, from an outsiders p.o.v., could have been prevented.

Interesting artilce. I agree partially.
My thoughts are...do not require a representive from west and east in the Finals!!! Let the 2 best teams meet, if it is a west vs west or east vs east then well desereved by those areas. In 2007 Odessa and ACH met in Finals. I do not buy travel (I do buy WIAA looking at East teams will bring potentially more crowd for their tickets).
I also do not like the fact that there are teams not playing a crossover this week during elimiations for others!! Everyone play from her on out. At this point it is win or go home. IMHO!!

Travel IS an issue. Picture Neah Bay having to travel to Colton for a 1st round game (or vice versa), a real scenario in the author's proposed framework. That has a real impact on a school's athletic budget. 4A schools may be able to accommodate for this. B level schools with budgets limited by their small enrollments cannot.
I think Warrior D is right on: requiring one east and one west team in the final is absurd. But to require first round teams to travel all the way across the state is also absurd.
