Lyle/Wisram lost to Prairie City 40-36. We lead the whole game (22-8 at half) except the last :40. Our inexperience showed in the 2nd half. Way too many self mistakes that we will fix.

Cougar errors overshadow big day for Matai as Prairie City takes win from Lyle-Wishram
Andrew Christiansen Reporter
There was anticipation in the air Saturday morning as Lyle-Wishram lined up for the first play from scrimmage against Prairie City in the Dufur Eight Man Classic. The Cougar fans were anxious to see Henry Matai run over a couple of Panthers for a big gain and the Panthers, no doubt were anxious to see if they could handle the big star running back. Both sides would have to wait, as Coach Don Smith crossed everyone up with a run up the middle by his other set back, Jaryd Quintero, for an 8-yard gain, giving the Panthers something else to think about. On the next play, Matai showed why he is one of the most feared runners in eight man football, as he rumbled to the outside and showed off his speed and power in a 57 yard touchdown run. He plowed through the right side of the Panther line for an easy two-point conversion. The Panthers responded with a quick touchdown of their own, but Cougar quarterback Ricky Wolff scored behind the blocking of Matai, who peeled off the double wing formation and it was 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. Things seemed to be getting out of hand when Matai opened the second quarter with an 84 yard run to the Panthers’ 8-yard line before punching it in from the three. That would be the only score of the quarter as Prairie City went into half time still within striking distance thanks to two Matai touchdowns that were called back due to illegal blocks. The Panthers scored first in the second half when Cole Hoberg broke free for 41 yards up the middle on a third and one dive play. Matai came right back, cutting behind a block by Johnathan VanAhn for a 50 yard touchdown, but Hoberg scored again after a long gain on a roll-out run by quarterback Brady Doty. The play exposed a weakness in the Cougar defense that they would soon exploit. Quintero and Matai alternated carries for a combined 45 yards as the third quarter ended at 28-20. The Panthers gained some confidence, blowing up the Cougar blocking to tackle Matai for a two yard loss on a fourth and four. On the next play, Doty went to the roll-out again, this time he went the distance and Lyle-Wishram held onto a 28-26 lead when the two-point conversion was short. The Cougars answered with a seven-play drive ending with a 47 yard touchdown run by Matai, cutting behind a sideline block by Woff. The Panthers would not quit, marching down field and scoring with 1:19 left in the game. The win seemed to be assured when Billy “Good Hands” Williams covered the ensuing on-side kick. But it wasn’t to be. A fumbled exchange two plays later gave the Panthers the ball at mid-field with 1:03 left in the game. Hoberg rushed for 10 yards and the Panthers tried to go with the Doty roll-out which was smothered this time by Matai and Quintero. With 40 seconds left in the game, Marshall Meacham beat triple coverage and hauled in a Doty pass to score. The Cougars looked spent with a 9-yard kick return, two procedure penalties and a sack to finish the game, a 40-36 loss. It overshadowed a monster game for Matai who gained 404 yards, putting him over the 4,200 yard mark for career rushing. Nolan Smith played inspired defense, leading the team with five sacks and 11 tackles. The Cougars have a bye week to shore up the defense before the home opener against Dufur on Sept. 17.
