STATE CHAMPIONSHIP OUTLOOK:
Let's get this out of the way right now, throw out the week 2 meeting between these two teams when TCP defeated Lummi 82-32. These are two different teams now, and that was 11 weeks ago. Some of these kids have even grown an inch or more since then. That was a LONG time ago.
Lummi has also added players to it's roster since then while TCP has lost a couple from their roster that played in that game. Most notably is senior guard and middle linebacker Jay Orth. I have been told that Orth is questionable for the championship game at this time. The 2008 all-state lineman and 2009 Southeast First-Team lineman and linebacker missed the Cusick contest with a "stinger" that he suffered midway into the third quarter against ACH in the quarterfinals. Lummi has added a new quarterback, a ultility player, and a receiver/defensive back that are playing huge roles in their march to the title game.
Lummi also dismantled previously undefeated Neah Bay on Friday, a team that the Blackhawks had lost to twice this season. The additions of quarterback Ty Jameson, RB/WR/QB Kyle Finkbonner, and receiver Eric Robinson coupled with the emerging running game of Eddie Williams has the Lummi offense in high gear at the right time.
Lummi ran the ball 37 times for 336 yards against Neah Bay, passing for just 61 yards. Anyone that knows Lummi would think those numbers should be the other way around, but air Sandusky went to ground chuck in the semi-final game to power them to victory.
Tri-Cities Prep had their usual (close to) 500 yards of offense on Saturday, 334 in the air and 145 on the ground. But it was their defense that held high powered, high scoring Cusick and led the Jaguars to victory Saturday. Spencer Shanholtzer completed just 45 percent of his passes for 270 yards and 2 interceptions. 95 of those passing yards were on two outstanding catches (one catch and run, the other off a tipped pass he dove for) by Josiah Rhoades. Rhoades finished with 3 catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns. No Cusick player rushed for over 100 yards and Rhoades was held to 46 on the ground.
Offensively this game looks like it could produce a Gridiron Classic record for points, but on paper, so did the Cusick/TCP match-up and that didn't happen. Lummi has clearly shown a softer defense throughout the season, but so did the Tri-Cities Prep boys compared to Cusick.
Predictions and week two games are out the window. The only thing that is certain is that Coach Whitsett (TCP) and coach Sandusky (Lummi) are two darn good coaches with great offensive minds. These two coaches strengths are finding weakneses in defenses and exploiting them. But which one finds the weakness in the other teams offense may tell the tale in this one. Should be a great championship game.
